Shanghai Electric Cable Research Institute Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Company Motivation Shanghai is the leading industrial and commercial city in China with 13 million people.It produces 1/12 of China's GDP.The city's electric power output reached 55 billion kilowatt hours in 2002. In recent years, Shanghai has been heavily investing to upgrade its power grid, including transforming overhead lines to underground cables, replacing old underground cables.Shanghai's first underground power cable was laid down in 1910's.It is expected that Shanghai will be the first city in China having a real demand for HTS power cables.
