Electric power supply shortage in Shanghai 2003-8-9
Shanghai, 8 August, 2003---Constant high temperature in this summer made Shanghai抯 electric power load reach a new historic level, power supply shortage become more and more serious. Shanghai is developing and the land resources are however limited, so the way to utilize power transmission systems of large capacity to increase the transmission ability of the present channels becomes the highlight of people's attention. Recently, Innopower Superconductor Cable Co., Ltd, Shanghai Electric Cable Research Institute and Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Company launched a "Symposium on HTS Cable Application in Shanghai" to promote the application of HTS cable. Experts from Germany, France, Japan, Korea and China exchanged their ideas and experiences about the future application of HTS technology. HTS is one of the key technologies in the 21st Century. A HTS cable could carry several times more current than a conventional copper cable with same cross section, while the loss of HTS cable is 10 times lower than that of conventional cable. Physicists in Finland predicted that superconductors could help Europe meet Kyoto target. This Environmental viewpoint can accelerate the commercialization of HTS applications. Dr. Neumueller from Siemens said to the reporter:揝hanghai is living city and Shanghai Electric power impressed me deeply. HTS cable is a kind of high-tech product which can solve the problem of resource shortage. Though its technology need to be further research and its costs need to be lowed in the near future, I still believe this high-tech product will play an important role in the modernization of Shanghai.敔?br> It is estimated that Shanghai's electric power load will reach 155 million kilowatt in 2005 and over 210 million kilowatt in 2010. Shanghai is expected to enhance its grid construction and renovation in the near future and HTS cable could meet precisely its requirement. The 30-meter long three-phase HTS cable, rated at 35kV and 2kA, will be installed in spring 2004 in Yunnan Power grid, which will be the third operating cable in the world, following America and Denmark. This new electric technology in power industry will be able to solve the present problems, providing reliable and safe electric power to keep up with the development of Shanghai.
